Spelling is an important aspect of literacy, but it has not received as much attention as reading. In this talk, I review studies looking at populations ranging from toddlers to adults. I examine how different aspects of spelling skill develop and the theories that attempt to account for the findings. The focus is on English, but studies of other languages are also considered. I also discuss implications for spelling instruction, both for typically developing children and children who experience problems in learning to read and spell.
