Chotiga PATTAMADILOK : "The contribution of the Visual Word Form Area to speech processing: When and how?"

    Chotiga Pattamadilok, Aix-Marseille Université France

The Visual Word Form Area (VWFA) is considered as one of the most critical brain structures within the reading network. Despite its essential role in reading, neuro-imaging studies also show that, under some circumstances, neurons within this brain area also respond to speech. The talk will focus on this “cross-modal” activity in order to discuss 1) the cognitive and methodological constraints contributing to the emergence of VWFA responses to speech and 2) the underlying neural mechanisms of this phenomenon (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.neuroimage.2018.11.014). A literature review and recent fMRI and transcranial magnetic stimulation studies conducted in our research group to address these issues will be presented.
