Ana P. Pinheiro - From Voice to Speaker: Neurocognitive Mechanisms of Self-Other Voice Distinction
Ana P. Pinheiro, University of Lisbon (Voice, Affect, & Speech Laboratory)
How does the brain determine whether a voice belongs to oneself or to someone else? In this talk, I will present behavioral and neuroimaging evidence illuminating the neurocognitive mechanisms that support the distinction between one’s own voice and the voices of others. I will then show how disruptions in these mechanisms provide a principled account of hallucinated voices, reframing them as disturbances of self-other voice attribution rather than purely perceptual anomalies. By placing self-other voice distinction at the intersection of action, perception, and personal identity, this framework offers mechanistic insights into auditory hallucinations and opens new avenues for computational psychiatry and translational neuroscience.
