Joseph F. Johnson - MRS in Neurochemistry: The Big Picture from particle physics to systems neuroscience

Joseph F. Johnson, Université Libre de Bruxelles

Joseph is a post-doctoral researcher working in the Brussels Auditory Neuroscience Group [BANG] under Prof. Axelle Calcus where he specialises on MR neuroimaging. Currently, BANG is conducting a longitudinal research project on adolescent brain development. In particular, they aim to uncover neuroplasticity markers linked to pubertal stage and hormonal correlates. Among the multimodal design, Joseph is focusing on Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) as a tool to uncover patterns of neurotransmitter concentrations in regions of interest serving perceptual and cognitive processes. A very valuable and accessible tool, it can easily be underused in our field of work. The aim in this seminar is to illustrate the utility of this method in developmental research and educate on the fundamental properties of MR. To dispel reservations that researchers may have in the application of MRS or difficulties in interpreting the data and principles underlying them, Joseph will walk researchers through MRS from proton to brain function.
